Triathlon

Sometimes we are just at the right spot and at the right time. We are currently camping at Millerton Lake State Recreation Area near Fresno, CA. This morning the nearby boat ramp was invaded by a couple hundred triathletes and we had front row seats for the Millerton Lake Triathlon. These folks swam 400 yards, bicycled twelve miles and ran three miles. Six of the fastest men did the whole route in under an hour.

Judy and I figure it would take us an hour also. An hour for each event! In fact we have ridden and hiked the bicycle route and the running route this week. I wonder what they would think about our strange looking tandem bicycle. I noticed that a couple of their bicycles were so light that the riders kept their shoes clipped into the peddles to weight the bicycle down so it wouldn’t float away in the breeze. Also it almost seems like cheating to not carry enough tools and spares to fix any possible failure along the route. One rider had a flat and the bicycle was so light he just jogged to the finish line with it over his shoulder rather than fix the flat.

I will post a series of photos from the triathlon below.

Oh did I give you the impression that these athletes were all young people? The group represented just about every age group even to those like us who are over sixty. I guess it just takes some dedication.

Sending our love to all, Gary and Judy from California for a while longer.
