Merry Christmas

Today we are in Austin, Texas, tomorrow we get on Amtrak, the Texas Eagle, and head for Springfield Illinois. We will be leaving Arcturus in the Elks parking lot here in Austin and we will be gone for a week visiting Neil’s family in Petersburg Illinois for the holiday season.

Tonight we headed out on foot to find a nice restaurant for Christmas eve dinner. Our first two choices were closed, but we stilled scored a winner at Romeo’s Italian Restaurant after about three miles of walking. I guess you could say it is a little presumptuous to go out to dinner without reservations in a strange town, but it keeps perfectly within our philosophy of “Life is a Journey.” Our journey is full of new adventures.

After supper the evenings excitement was making some Christmas ornaments for some lucky family members. This consisted of painting Georgia’s hand with paint and making a hand-print on the ornament. This was great fun, but I think there are hand prints in some other less desirable places also.

We will be sending this blog off from the Texas Eagle once we get settled in, so I will be able to add some anecdotes from our train trip.

Christmas Morning:

Everyone up at 06:30: Drill master Gary was pushing to get ready for the taxis at 08:30: Neil cooked up all the left-overs for breakfast and we had ten minutes to contemplate our navels before the departure time. Read More »

Goat Head Thorns:

We have been feeling rather cocky this year. We have ridden our tandem bicycle a couple thousand miles any without flat tires. Well the odds caught up with us today in Deming, New Mexico. Read More »

Grand Marshal

We are here in Carson City Nevada just in time for the Nevada Day’s Parade. While we were snooping around the Nevada State Railroad Museum today we chanced on a photo shoot. A Channel 8 special reporter was interviewing the Grand Marshal for the Saturday parade. The catch is the Grand Marshal is a 36 ton 1875 era steam locomotive, no. 22 named the Inyo. Read More »

Family Times:

There has been a lot to write about this past week. We are still hanging out around Gilroy California. We have been helping Glen and Barb cope with some corrective surgery that Barb needed to get out of the way. Barb is on the mend now, but not without some anxious moments when Barb returned to the hospital for one more night of observation. Read More »

Footsteps of History:

Today we toured historic downtown Montgomery Alabama: First by tourist trolley and then by foot. We literally walked in the footsteps of history: The history of Alabama as a state. The history of the Confederacy as Jefferson Davis was inaugurated in 1861. History continues nearly a hundred years later when the civil rights movement started here with a young lady named Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955. Again in March of 1965 with the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march. Read More »

Railroad Museum:

I only wish that I could teleport my son, Glen and my Son-in-law Neil here to be with me this evening. We are boondocking in the parking lot of the Railroad Museum here in Hillsborough New Brunswick. Thirty feet from the nose of Arcturus is parked a Canadian Voodoo Fighter Jet. All along the tracks to the left side of the coach are railroad equipment, beautifully preserved, and I think some of it is used for excursions. Read More »

The People of PEI:

For several days we have been touring around the Island Province of Prince Edward. We have toured some museums, ate lunch in different towns and stopped at every information center we came across. The people we have talked to are quite friendly and helpful. Read More »

Just what is a Tuzigoot anyway?

Ah well! It is a name “we” have given to the site of the dwellings of an ancient culture in north central Arizona. We call the people Sinaqua which is Spanish for “without water.” They irrigated crops and built masonary, above ground, dwellings. They lived here from perhaps 1100 to 1400 AD and were long gone when the Spanish entered the valley in 1583. Read More »

From the Windy City:

Well last Friday we achieved our goal of going to Petersburg Illinois to help the Tice family present the newlywed couple, Neil and Renee, to their friends and neighbors in Illinois. A grand party it was too. Read More »
